I remember the screen door and how when it would open how I would be delighted by the smells of bakery and frosting. The glass cases were filled with glazed treats and the choices seemed limitless.

Later, this general store was transformed into Gina's Pies are Square and it became one of my favorite places in the world. Gina's was located at the halfway point between school and my house and was a great place to hang out with friends and enjoy a slice of pie and italian soda. Thanks to Gina's, Vanilla Coke was my favorite before it even came out in a can.

The former general store became not only a pie shop but an antique store as well. I would spend hours looking at all the trinkets. Gina's is probably the root of my obsession with all things vintage.

When I left Wilton for the military I quickly grew home sick. Dustin, my little brother, would beg me to visit, attempting to bribe me with pie from Gina's. We had monthly brother/sister pie dates at Gina's for years.

My relationship with Dustin and the connection I make between him and Gina's kept me coming back to my little home town. Our mandatory pie dates were my best memories with Dustin. They molded our relationship and forced us to take time out of our our busy schedules to spend with each other.

The last time I returned to Wilton was for Dustin's funeral. When I arrived in town, for a dose of pie shaped comfort, I walked the few blocks to Gina's. It was gone, too. The store had closed about a month earlier.

Following the funeral, I received a letter from Gina. She sent her condolences and reminisced on her memories of Dustin and I together. She had noticed how our relationship strengthened over our pie dates.

I haven't been back to Wilton since and I don't know when, or if, I will return.

Miranda K. Yes, i said village. Population 545. "Heart" of the Elroy - Sparta bike trail and home to the former Gina's pie's are square. I spent most of my days with my head stuck in a book. I was thirsty for knowledge and BORED stiff!

So, when i turned 17 and read every book in our public library I joined the military! Knitting, sewing, embroidery, screen printing, dying, weaving...the list goes on and on. Yep! I'm in LOVE!

Since graduation I have shown my wearable art in 3 fashion shows at the Milwaukee Art Museum. My artwork explores how female identity is formed though the process of camouflage. I love teaching, making art, and sharing my knowledge and stories with others. I hope to one day teach at a university but for now, I am going to share all that i know, with you...right here...on my blog!

Enjoy!

~I am currently a freelance artist/fashion designer and curator of Tenth Street Gallery.~

Miranda K.
